The Essentials

What Is an Industrial Gateway?

An industrial gateway sits between machines and the cloud and does two jobs a router can’t: it translates the protocols industrial equipment actually speaks — Modbus, BACnet, KNX, M-Bus, OPC UA — into modern formats like MQTT, and it runs applications on the device itself, so data is processed, filtered and acted on at the machine instead of a distant server. That means legacy equipment comes online without replacement, decisions happen locally even when the connection drops, and only the data that matters travels to the cloud. Three Jobs

Edge Computing, Protocol Bridging or Building Automation?

One question decides it: does the data need to be processed, translated, or both? The range splits into three roles.

Edge Computing

The Robustel EG5100 and EG5120 are full Debian Linux computers with cellular built in — run Docker containers, Node-RED flows or your own Python, Java and C applications right at the machine. Choose when data needs processing on site, latency matters, or a router plus a separate industrial PC is one box too many.

Protocol Bridging

The Milesight EG71 aggregates field devices — RS485, KNX, LoRaWAN sensors, analog and digital I/O — and hands them to a BMS or cloud as BACnet, Modbus, MQTT or HTTP. Choose when existing equipment needs to reach a modern platform, or wireless sensors need to become native BMS points.

Building Automation

The Robustel LG5120 unifies a building’s protocols — KNX, BACnet, Modbus, M-Bus metering and LoRaWAN — with Node-RED logic and dashboards on the device. Industrial Gateway Questions, Answered

What is an industrial IoT gateway?

An industrial IoT gateway connects machines, meters and field devices to the cloud, translating industrial protocols like Modbus, BACnet, KNX and M-Bus into modern formats like MQTT — and, on edge computing models, running applications directly on the device so data is processed at the machine rather than a remote server.

What’s the difference between a gateway and an industrial router?

A router moves data; a gateway also works on it. If the site just needs equipment connected to the internet reliably, a router does the job. If protocols need translating, data needs filtering, or logic needs to run on site — alarms, control decisions, local dashboards — that’s gateway territory. Many Robustel gateways include full router functionality anyway, so one box can do both.

Can a gateway connect my old machines and meters?

Usually yes — that’s the core job. Equipment speaking Modbus RTU over RS485, BACnet MS/TP, KNX or M-Bus connects to the gateway’s ports, and the gateway presents the data onward as MQTT to a cloud platform or BACnet/IP and Modbus TCP to a BMS or SCADA. Nothing gets replaced; the existing kit just becomes reachable.

What can I actually run on an edge gateway?

The Robustel EG-series runs full Debian Linux: Docker containers, Node-RED flows, and applications in Python, Java, C, C++ or Node.js, with tens of thousands of packages available from the Debian repository. The EG5120 adds a neural processing unit for machine-learning workloads at the edge. In practice that means dashboards, protocol logic, alarm engines and even AI inference running beside the machine.

Can gateway data feed into my BMS or SCADA?

Yes — the EG71 and LG5120 forward data as BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP and OPC UA, so readings from wireless sensors and field devices appear as standard points inside Niagara, Siemens, Schneider and similar systems. Cloud platforms are covered by MQTT and HTTP on the same devices.

Do these work on Irish networks — and who supports them?

Yes — the cellular models are supplied for use on Vodafone, Three and Eir, with dual-SIM failover on the Robustel units.
