What Is an Industrial Antenna?

An industrial antenna is the external antenna that connects a cellular router, gateway or IoT device to the mobile network — converting the radio signal in the air into the electrical signal your hardware uses. Modern 4G and 5G routers use MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output), sending data over two or four antenna ports at once, so the antenna must match the router: a 4×4 MIMO router needs a 4×4 MIMO antenna to reach its rated speed. Get the antenna right and a marginal site becomes a reliable one; get it wrong and the best router in the world underperforms. Choosing the Right Antenna

Four decisions cover most projects. When in doubt, send us the router model and a photo of the site — we’ll spec it for you.

Omni or Directional?

Omni antennas receive from every direction — the right default for vehicles and most sites. Only go directional when the mast you’re aiming at is fixed and you have line of sight: you gain reach, but you must point it and keep it pointed.

Gain Across the Band

Two antennas with the same headline dBi are not equal. What matters is gain across the bands your network actually uses — a cheap antenna can peak where you don’t need it and collapse where you do. We spec against Irish operator bands, not the datasheet headline.

Match the MIMO Count

Count your router’s antenna ports. A 5G router with four cellular ports needs a 4×4 antenna — connect only two and you throttle your own speed. Combo antennas add WiFi and GPS elements in the same housing, one hole in the roof.

Cable Kills Signal

Every metre of coax between antenna and router costs signal — long thin cable runs can throw away more than the antenna gains. Keep runs short, upsize the cable, or eliminate it entirely with an enclosure antenna that mounts the router inside.

LTE networks around 450 MHz are growing because low frequencies carry further and punch deeper into buildings — and the 410–430 MHz range is Ireland’s smart-grid spectrum family. Both Poynting and Panorama build antennas for these bands, in single or multi-element configurations, standalone or combined with standard 4G and 5G.

Antenna Questions, Answered

What is a MIMO antenna?

MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) means the router transmits and receives over several antenna elements at once — 2×2 uses two, 4×4 uses four. It multiplies data speed and reliability without more spectrum. A MIMO antenna packs those elements into one housing, so a “2-in-1” or “4-in-1” antenna is one unit serving all of the router’s cellular ports.

Do I need an omni or a directional antenna?

Omni for most jobs: it works from any direction, suits vehicles and multi-mast areas, and needs no aiming. Choose directional only when the site is fixed, the serving mast is known, and you can point the antenna with line of sight — you’ll gain reach and stability at the signal edge. Mount height often matters more than either choice: higher means fewer obstructions.

Is higher dBi gain always better?

No. The headline dBi is a peak figure — two antennas with identical spec-sheet gain can perform very differently across the band, and higher gain also means a narrower beam that must be aimed. What matters is consistent gain on the frequencies your Irish operator actually uses at your site. That’s why we spec antennas against the bands, not the biggest number.

What antennas work on 410–430 MHz and 450 MHz networks in Ireland?

Private LTE networks in the 400 MHz range — including Ireland’s smart-grid spectrum at 410–430 MHz — need antennas built for those low bands. Poynting’s OMNI-600 and PANL-401 cover from 410 MHz, and Panorama offers a dedicated 450 MHz LTE antenna range in single and multi-element configurations, alone or combined with 4G/5G. We supply them alongside the matching 400 MHz-band routers.

Can the router mount inside the antenna?

Yes — that’s exactly what the Poynting EPNT range does. The antenna housing has space for a compact router inside, so the whole system mounts at height on a pole or wall with no coax between antenna and radio — and no coax means no cable loss. It’s a favourite for site CCTV, cellular WiFi access points and remote-site connectivity.
